Fishery

Approximately 75 % of the quota has been already caught, yet plant workers have only earned a minimum amount of hours. Some fishery workers have gotten together and formed an Action Committee to address the concerns of the fishery people and put forward these concerns to the government until the fishery can return to a sustainable level. The fishery workers feel there should be some type of assistance for all people affected. On July 29,2005 the members of the Action Committee held a meeting to discuss some ideas on how to address the issue. A decision was made to meet with MP Mr. Bill Matthews to further discuss the issue.

Roads Work

Tender closing date for roadswork (Causeway Extension to Plant Road, phase three) is August 17, 2005. After tender closing there could be approximately two weeks before work begins.

Radio Station Update

As you all are aware, Burnt Islands is receiving its very own radio station. Due to funding difficulties with HRDC, the progress of the radio station has been temperarily delayed. However the matter is currently being dealt with and the issue should be resolved soon.

Backhoe

On July 5th, 2005, an inquiry was made by officials from the Town of Burnt Islands concerning the use of a backhoe type attachment with the 938f Caterpillar Loader. Some of the workers had concerns relating to their safety while operating the unit, therefore on July 6th, 2005, a visit from Occupational Health and Safety was conducted to inspect the unit. Based on their observations, the unit was not equipped with a Roll Over Protective Structure or a Fall On Protective Structure. As a result, the Occupational Health and Safety Officer had no alternative but to issue a Stop Work Order to prevent this attachment from being used. However the Town of Burnt Islands has an agreement with the Town of Isle aux Morts to obtain use of their equipment when necessary.
