Ann Harvey Days

Background

Ann Harvey, one of the lesser-known heroines of Newfoundland, along with her father George saves almost two hundred people in two shipwrecks. A coast guard vessel was named in her honor. Such great distinctions, but who was Ann the daughter, the wife, and mother.

Ann was born in 1811 on he island of Isle aux Morts. She was the first child of George and Jane Harvey. When she was 17, she assisted her father and brother in a daring rescue of 163 people from the brig "Dispatch" that is a daring feat for someone so young.

In 1830 @ the age of 19, Ann Married a Mr. Charles Gillam of Port aux Basques. Together they had six children. After her marriage she resided at Point Blanche, near Port aux Basques, but later moved to Port aux Basques where she lived until her death.

On September 14, 1838, Ann, once again, aided her father in another rescue; this time of 25 people from the ship "Rankin" Here was a woman with a family of her own to think of, but she put aside thoughts of personal safety to help with the shipwreck victims.

Ann Died in 1860 in Port aux Basques. She was relatively young, just 49 when her passing occured. She was buried in Port aux Basques in an unmarked grave. Ann was an exceptional woman. Not only did she brave the harsh Newfoundland environment, she overcame the obstacles of rough living and won. Such courage deserves to be acknowledged and it was. On July 17, 1987 a canadian Coast Guard vessel was offically christened, bearing the name Ann Harvey. It was appropriate that Coast Guard vessel responsible for saving people is named for a woman responsible for saving almost 200 people. The boat will forever keep her name alive and her actions remembered.
